(Fleury would become longtime friends with Gottfried Kassowitz, the conductor who premiered the work.) Compared to Zemlinsky's work, which has a sensual and rough sound, Fleury's work is more melodic and flamboyant, and it will be interesting to compare the two works. This album is preceded by a vivid song by Grillpatzer about the tragic death of the Greek poet Sappho (Sappho).
