He studied under Ambroise Thomas at the Paris Conservatory and was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1861. He later served as music director of the Madeleine and Sainte-Clotilde churches, but upon the death of Thomas, he was appointed director of the Paris Conservatory. However, he resigned after one of Ravel's disqualifications from the Prix de Rome in 1905, and he left many works as a composer thereafter. However, he was overshadowed by his contemporaries Saint-Saëns and Fauré, and his vast oeuvre has been largely forgotten. In recent years, however, his fascinating works have been revisited, and there are more opportunities to perform his stage and chamber music works. Du Bois, who was also a renowned music theorist, never abandoned tonality in his works, and in this album we hear chamber music for oboe, which he particularly loved, and a string quartet. The oboe is played by the virtuoso Lajos Rentschel. Other musicians include Renee Yamahata (Runie Yamahata), who is currently harpist of the SWR Symphony Orchestra, and the Parisy Quartet.
