He began his conducting career in 1955 at the Bolshoi Theatre, where he served as principal conductor from 1962 and as principal conductor of the Russian State Symphony Orchestra (then the USSR State Symphony Orchestra) from 1965. In 1979, he became the guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. He frequently visited Japan to conduct the NHK Symphony Orchestra and has gained many Russian music fans. This recording of Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), made two weeks before his death, brings out the rich and brilliant sound of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and the entire performance is filled with a terrible tension. The BBC orchestra members must have been truly saddened to hear the news of his passing. The other, Prokofiev (1891-1953), was recorded in 1988 and is a masterful performance, acclaimed by critics at the time as \"a detailed and believable performance that surpasses any Alexander Nevsky I have heard, and a triumphant finale.\" This disc shows how much Svetlanov was loved in England. Sound quality is excellent.
