The instruments featured in this project are the bass viol, born in London in 1679, and the archlute, born in Venice in 1654. These instruments were only kept in storage and rarely played, but they have kept their miraculously beautiful tones. In considering a suitable program for these instruments, we came across manuscripts in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, which were compiled by several hands between 1660 and 1670, and which, apart from Anthony Poole, the last master of the viola da gamba, contain almost no other works whose authorship cannot be traced. The authorship of most of the works in the manuscripts cannot be traced, but they are beautiful. Also included and published are "Greensleeves," which is said to have been known to everyone in England in the 17th century but whose origin is unclear, and "The Summer Rose," which is accompanied by an ancient instrumental ensemble and is performed in a very atmospheric and attractive manner.

Matilde Vial, who plays viola, began studying viola da gamba at the age of 8. She studied with Marianne Murrell and Philippe Pierlot, and was also trained by Wieland Kuijken. Arch-lute Thibault Roussel studied theorbo, old-time guitar and lute with Banjaman Perrault. He is active in Correspondances and Pygmalion. Ronan Carril of the Virginal studied with Olivier Beaumont, Blandine Lannoux, and Kenneth Weiss, and is a talented player who has won many harpsichord competitions. Zakari Wilder, a well-known BCJ tenor, joins him for this delicate and superb album.

=Mathilde Vial (excerpted from the booklet).

To hear long-forgotten music played on instruments that have remained silent for centuries is to embark on a journey through time, to discover a unique world of sound, to experience that which always connects us to the past, that eternal emotion that music gives us. We are a bunch of people.... ... We are transported back briefly to the late 17th century and surrounded by English musicians. The reign of the viola da gamba was coming to an end in England, and Anthony Poole was the last master of this instrument. Fleeing his homeland to escape religious persecution, he fled to the Jesuit Conservatory of Saint-Thomer, where he was among the composers who composed the music for viola contained in the precious 200-page manuscript we used in our recording."

HARMONIA MUNDI

Tracklisting:

1.Anonymous: Suite in G minor: I.
