The Wellgus Ensemble presents the music of Austrian composer Blasius Amon (1560?-1590) as a major discovery of 2024. Amon began his musical career as a choirboy in the court chapel of Archduke Ferdinand II in Innsbruck, where he learned music from the Flemish music director Alexander Utendal. His next teacher was Andrea Gabrieli, a master of the Venetian school of music. After returning to Vienna, Amon joined the Franciscans and around 1585 was appointed as a chant instructor at the Franciscan monastery in Heiligenkreuz. Amon lived a short life, only 30 years old, during which time he left behind many internationally acclaimed high-quality works and made a name for himself as a composer in very high demand in the music market of his time. In the course of only ten years, five collections of his own music were published, each consisting entirely of his own works.Published in Antwerp in 1609, Pharesius' anthology Florilegium sacrarum includes works by Amon. This collection is characterized by two styles: the Franco-Flemish imitation technique and the Venetian polyphonic choral style. Amon is a master of the former and was the first German-speaking composer to adopt the latter, which Paul van Nieuwel describes as \"surprisingly original. Together with the Wielgus Ensemble, he has created an anthology that includes the seven-voice Mass for the Dead and motets from the Sacrae cantiones, published in Vienna in 1590.
