Beyond the Music - The Complete RCA Victor Recordings\" is a 15-CD tribute set commemorating the 125th anniversary of the birth of Marian Anderson (1897-1993), the first black contralto to grace the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House. On Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939, in front of an audience of 75,000 people gathered for an outdoor concert by the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., Anderson, who had been denied a place in Constitution Hall because she was black, performed \"My Country, 'Tis of Thee. When Anderson began singing \"My Country, 'Tis of Thee,\" a new history was made in America. Discovered by her neighbors, the singing of \"The Lady of Philadelphia\" reached across the United States, as well as Europe and Asia, and was performed before presidents and royalty from around the world, earning her the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. Arturo Toscanini, the conductor of the Philadelphia Lady, said, \"This is a wonderful voice that can only be heard once every 100 years.Anderson's dignity, courage, and firm belief in human equality made him an iconic figure in the American civic movement. This 15-disc set is the first compilation of all the recordings Anderson made for RCA Victor between his acoustic years (1924) and his retirement (1966), many of which are being released on CD for the first time (72 tracks, 9 of which are previously unreleased recordings). meticulously remastered at 24bit\/ 96kHz from the original master tapes, both original and good commercial, mono and stereo, and mastered by Andreas K. Meyer and Jennifer Naldsen, both multiple Grammy Award winners. This is the first time that the complete retired concert from October 24, 1964, at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., has been released. The fifteen recordings are arranged by chronology and genre, and include Anderson's trademark Negro spirituals from various periods, baroque arias by Bach and Handel, songs by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and R. Strauss, vocal music with orchestra by Fritz Reiner, Pierre Montoux, and other conductors of the day, and a monumental performance of the Met's \"Masked Ball\" in Anderson's later years. Anderson's important footsteps can be traced in actual sound on a rare collection of recordings from Anderson's later years, including Bach and Handel baroque arias, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, R. Strauss songs, vocal works with orchestra performed with the best conductors of the day including Fritz Reiner and Pierre Montoux, and a highlight recording of the Met's \"Masked Ball,\" a monumental performance of Anderson's later life, conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos. This is a valuable collection that allows us to trace Anderson's important footsteps in actual sound.
