He studied piano at St. Peter's Conservatory in the city and moved to Milan to study conducting with Antonino Votto, who frequently conducted for Maria Callas, and also earned a degree in composition. He also worked as Toscanini's assistant at La Scala and came to prominence in 1967 when he won the Guido Cantelli Prize for Young Conductors. In 1973, Muti succeeded Klemperer as principal conductor of the New Philharmonia Orchestra in London (which reopened under its original name, the Philharmonia Orchestra, during his tenure). In 1980, he succeeded Ormandy as Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, a position he held until 1992. 1986-2005, he was Music Director of La Scala in Milan.During his tenure, he confirmed Verdi's pre-eminence in opera, conducting numerous Verdi operas in Milan and major projects such as Mozart's Da Ponte Trilogy and Wagner's Ring Cycle. He has also performed 18th century Neapolitan composers and rare works by composers such as Gluck, Cherubini, and Spontini. 2004 saw the revival of Salieri's \"Europa found\", an opera first performed at La Scala in 1778, at the renovated La Scala. 2010, he was appointed Music Director of the Chicago he was appointed Music Director of the Symphony Orchestra. Riccardo Muti has received numerous honorary doctorates and other distinctions. Passion, accuracy, and fidelity to the score have always been hallmarks of Riccardo Muti's interpretations. While his illustrious career has encompassed both the concert hall and the opera house, this 91-CD-box set focuses on recordings of orchestral, choral, and vocal works, with the exception of opera. The Warner Classics catalog is particularly rich, especially since they were virtually exclusive conductors with the former EMI until 1993.An audio documentary created in 2020 about his many outstanding recording periods with the Philharmonia Orchestra, narrated and produced by John Transky, has been added as a bonus CD. The recordings in this box are presented almost in chronological order of recording, and each disc is enclosed in a paper jacket with the original jacket design. The recordings are based on the most recent master recordings released.
