Ritter, a Russian-born German composer, was a devoted follower of Liszt and a friend of Wagner. For Tuile, who was in search of the essence of his own music, the encounter with Ritter must have been a valuable experience. The influence of the New German School can be seen in Twillet's compositions. Thieule's sextet exhibits a rather traditional form reminiscent of Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2, whereas Poulenc, by contrast, was always a composer of spontaneity, musical wit, and improvisation, and in fact rarely attempted to learn the traditional sensibilities of the period.
