4589538835675
Pfitzner (1869-1949) - Pfitzner: Orchestral Works, Concertos - Import 5 CD Box set

Credits:

Pfitzner (1869-1949)

Description:

This is a project typical of cpo: a reissue of a 5-CD box set containing all of Hans Pfitzner’s symphonies, concertos, and other works previously released.
This collection of Pfitzner’s orchestral works was recorded between 1982 and 1989 by cpo, a label that has been enthusiastically promoting recordings of German music from the early Baroque period through the modern era. Pfitzner was born in Moscow in 1869 but moved to Germany at the age of three. From then on, he was active in the German-speaking world. While he is best known for works featuring vocal parts, such as the opera *Palestrina* and the cantata *On the German Spirit*, this box set—which includes nearly all of his Romantic-influenced orchestral works, performed and recorded to a high standard—is an essential resource for anyone wishing to become acquainted with this composer.
Pfitzner’s style is extremely conservative; while his orchestration bears some resemblance to that of the late Richard Strauss, he never strays beyond the bounds of tonality. With the exception of his early Cello Concerto in A minor, composed when he was 19, his symphonies and concertos follow a classical three- or four-movement structure; even his longest works do not exceed 40 minutes in playing time. Their densely structured compositions and rich, deeply nuanced sound are so reminiscent of Brahms that one might call them direct descendants of his style. The Piano Concerto featuring Banfield as soloist and the Cello Concerto collection featuring Gerlingas as soloist were both world premiere recordings (excluding CD releases of concert broadcast recordings). The “Duo” is written in the style of a double concerto with an accompanying orchestra. The calm sound of the South German Orchestra, combined with Albert’s steady conducting—he has been instrumental in unearthing and recording numerous lesser-known works ranging from the German late Romantic period to the modern era—is ideal for savoring these pieces.
Naxos Japan
