Using stylistic elements from different eras as a guide, we delve into the depths of “sorrow.”]\nAs 2032—the 300th anniversary of the birth of Haydn, the “Father of the Symphony”—gradually approaches, the HAYDN2032 project, led by conductor Giovanni Antonini and dedicated to performing and recording all of Haydn’s symphonies on period instruments, has reached its 19th volume. Thanks to a meticulous selection of works that follows neither chronological nor numerical order, many notable pieces still await their fresh interpretation, making this volume particularly ambitious. More than half of the Haydn works included here are in minor keys, and by pairing them with masterpieces by 21st-century composer Pärt and 17th-century composer Schweitzer, this program allows us to rediscover the timeless appeal of Haydn’s works. Symphony No. 108, the only work in a major key, was assigned a high number because musicologists overlooked it until the early 20th century, yet its composition dates back to when Haydn was around 30 years old. Alongside Symphony No. 44—whose slow movement was later performed at Haydn’s own funeral—and Symphony No. 52 in C minor, also from the “Sturm und Drang” period, Il Giardino Armonico’s performance, vibrant yet never losing its stability, highlights the works’ inexhaustible charm. Alongside Pärt’s work—based on an unaccompanied choral piece—which conveys a quiet, poignant intensity through its gut-string ensemble, and Schait’s Padovana, which showcases Antonini’s bold interpretation and the ensemble’s sensibility even before the Baroque era, you will surely appreciate the depth of early music performance under the universal theme of “sorrow.”\n*Japanese liner notes for the domestic release… Tatsuo Shirasawa\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Alpha","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":52637715267873,"sku":"4589538831059","price":23.95,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538831059.jpg?v=1777964276","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/en-nl\/products\/4589538831059","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
