Of course, there have been numerous renowned performances in the past, and the soloist on this recording, Frank Peter Zimmermann, also recorded this piece in 1991 with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Jansons. For Zimmermann—who was hailed at the time as one of Germany’s most promising young musicians—this marks his first performance of Sibelius in 17 years. The performance unfolds with a maturity evident in both tone and expression. “Like an eagle gliding majestically through the crisp, frigid northern sky…” One of the pleasures of listening to this Violin Concerto is surely the opening violin solo. He races through this passage with a dashing and powerful energy. The same goes for the cadenza in the middle of the first movement. There is absolutely no hesitation. The serene beauty of the climax in the second movement will also linger in your memory. And then comes the final movement. While this music could easily turn into a “Festival of Fire” with the slightest misstep, Zimmermann and Storgå build the intensity of the piece while maintaining a sense of refinement. On previous recordings, I had the impression that the violinist produced a somewhat dry tone, but on this recording, the beauty of his tone is simply breathtaking. His deep, resonant low notes are particularly noteworthy. Storgå, who took up the post of Principal Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in the fall of 2008, seems to be steadily deepening his relationship with this orchestra.
