Wojciech Valecek (Piano) Recorded July 5-7, 2023 at Concert Hall of the KarolSzymanowski Academy of Music inKatowice, Poland Total recording time: 77 min. This recording includes the first draft of "The Christmas Tree" from 1876 and other small pieces from his later years. Composed by Liszt for his granddaughter Daniela, "The Christmas Tree" is divided into three groups: traditional carols, Christmas from a child's perspective, and adult memories. The version generally performed today is the 1882 revised version, but the first draft is performed here.Gondola of Sorrow II "Elegy No. 3" was composed by Liszt in anticipation of Richard Wagner's death, and is included here in its 1882 first draft and 1883 revised version (subsequent revisions also exist). Lullaby, a simple melody composed for a pupil, was first published in 1958. Elegy No. 1, "Lullaby in the Grave," was dedicated by Liszt to his pupil Marie Mukhanov and was published in 1875. In Memory of Sándor Pétéfi is about the Hungarian poet Sándor Pétéfi. Emperor Wilhelm! is a short march that Liszt may have composed after his audience with Emperor Wilhelm I. It was not published until 2003. Mihály Moszonyi," the seventh piece in "A Historical Portrait of Hungary," is one of a collection of songs from his later years celebrating Hungarian culture, and Mihály Moszonyi was a composer. Though "Resignation" is best known as an organ piece, the second draft, revised for piano, is included here. The Cossack Songs is a short, gorgeous work discovered in the library of Liszt's friend Countess Zamoyska, whose autograph score was published for the first time in 1960. It is performed by Wojciech Valecek, a Polish native who specializes in Liszt's works. (Naxos Japan)
