Composed in 1998, the work consists of a series of musical sketches inspired by the 1854 book *Walden* by 19th-century American writer and naturalist Henry David Thoreau. After spending two years living near Walden Pond in an experiment to “nurture love in the woods,” Thoreau presented in this work a vision of innovative, solitary, and rigorous individualism dedicated entirely to harmony with nature. Gebbels’ *Walden* was introduced to European audiences as the first work to musically interpret literary material from a German perspective. The work is dedicated to the American artist Bob Ratman, who is a painter, sculptor, performer, and musician who also plays instruments he designed himself. Ratman provides the narration, and the piece is performed by Hungarian conductor Péter Eötvös and the Ensemble Modern Orchestra.\n\nHeiner Goebbels was born in 1952.
