This album features three cello concertos by Gian Francesco Malipiero, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and Riccardo Malipiero. The Cello Concerto by Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968), written for Piatigorsky, begins with a biblical tone, a childlike monologue melody, and powerful harmonic chords. Malipiero (1882-1973), best known for his revision of the complete works of Monteverdi and Vivaldi, brought his musical sensibility to bear by transcribing old Italian music.While working with his colleague Casella to revive Italian classical music in the 20th century, his own works are influenced by French impressionist music, especially Debussy, and are known for their free form, non-traditional movement structure, and innovative use of harmony and linear counterpoint. This cello concerto, too, has its own symbolic expression, with an eloquently joyful theme in the classical style, followed by lyricism-inspiring passages and a trio of cellos, large drums, and small drums. Riccardo Malipiero (1914-2003), nephew of Gian Francesco Malipiero, composed 12-tone music from 1945 onward, and the cello concerto was composed during his successful 1957 comic opera. It is a fascinating and original work in which the solo cello seems to swim freely amongst the uninhibited sounds of the brass and woodwinds. This recording commemorates Castelnuovo Tedesco on the 50th anniversary of his death. In combination with this, I have recorded two cello concertos of the highest musical significance.
