Cleobury chose this program as his last album of recordings with King's College, and the tension between both Cleobury and the choir makes for a pleasant performance as well. Bruckner's religious vocal works number approximately 60, or about two-fifths of his total output, and his seven-part Ave Maria, WAB 6, is one of his early masterpieces and is widely regarded as one of his most popular unaccompanied religious works. The Mass in E minor, written for eight voices and wind instruments for the dedication of the dedication chapel of the New Cathedral in Linz, is a magnificent performance with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
