The release of the new DVD and BD includes Symphony No. 3 (recorded in 2012), No. 5 (recorded in 2013), No. 9 (recorded in 2015), No. 4 (recorded in 2015), and No. 6 (recorded in 2015). This release is Symphony No. 3. Bruckner's symphonies usually have edition problems, but this time Thielemann uses the 1877 second draft for No. 3. The first draft of No. 3 was completed in 1873. At that time, Thielemann showed Wagner the complete score of No. 2 and No. 3, and later dedicated No. 3 to him. This first draft contained many quotations from Wagner. However, it was deemed unplayable at the premiere, and Bruckner made major revisions. Here the phrase taken from Wagner has been deleted. This is the second manuscript; the revision based on the second manuscript published in 1950 is called the Eser edition, which does not have the coda for the third movement scherzo. Thielemann used the new Novak edition, published in 1981, which includes the coda. As for the coda, it is said that Bruckner himself wished to have it removed when it was published by Rettig in 1878. Speaking of Bruckner by the Staatskapelle Dresden, there is a collection of recordings with Sinopoli, and No. 3 recorded by the same duo in 1990 also uses the same version as Thielemann's this time. The beautiful string sound of the Dresden is a must, and the soft but deep sound of the brass is wonderful, and the grandeur of the opening is breathtaking. The scherzo section is also thrilling, and the motive played by the violins is very impressive.Thielemann is meticulously detailed and deeply committed to the music, especially in the performance leading to the coda, where he sustains a high level of tension with ultimate weakness, and the subsequent opening of the music creates a deep resonance without force.
