As a composer, he made a lasting connection between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. His Symphony No. 4 was performed at the \"GrossenKaim-Saal\" in Munich on November 25, 1901, and was given its world premiere by the predecessor of the current Munich Philharmonic Orchestra (the Kaim Orchestra). His works are a large part of the Munich Philharmonic's core repertoire, and the orchestra continues that tradition on many occasions; following the first MPHIL release of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in September 2016, this Fourth Symphony is also very closely intertwined with it. The live recording of this album was made in Munich's Gasthaig with the Salzburg-born soprano Genia Kümeyer. This was followed by a highly acclaimed performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City.Gergiev's performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 4 was highly acclaimed, \"In the finale of Mahler's Fourth Symphony, the strings and Kühmeyer sang beautifully and sumptuously, bringing out the essence of the work\" (The New York Times, April 6th 2017). Gergiev has brought particular attention to the Austro-German repertoire throughout his career, evoking the enduring appeal of Gustav Mahler. He has spent recent decades exploring the Austro-German repertoire for his interpretations of Wagner, Strauss, Mahler, and Bruckner, all of which are central to the Munich Philharmonic's repertoire.
