In fact, his career was quite unique. Born in 1879, he held a veterinary degree and served as a major in the Ministry of Defense, managing military horses until 1939. He studied music while preparing for his medical exams and also received instruction from Stenhammar. All five of his symphonies have titles and construct a rich, evocative world. While composing the four movements of his Symphony No. 1, the tragedy of the Titanic occurred; he discarded the movements he had written up to that point and added a funeral march.
