He is one of the most frequently performed contemporary Russian composers, having gained fame with \"Rosenthal's Children,\" commissioned by the Bolshoi Theater, and has also collaborated successfully with Gidon Kremer and composed numerous film scores. It is interesting to note that Deshatnikov, who is considered one of the most original composers of his time, has modeled his work on Chopin's in the form of the \"24 Preludes\". The title \"Bukovina\" is the name of a hilly region in the Carpathian Mountains that straddles Ukraine in the north and Romania in the south. The modern compositional techniques are spiced with a Western Ukrainian folk flavor, which adds a nice touch. The liner notes (in Russian and English) are by Maria Stepanova, a contemporary Russian poet with a unique sensibility, and are a perfect collaboration with Deshatnikov's music. Songs of Bugovina was acclaimed by the New York Times and received its world premiere in October 2017 in a new ballet by American Ballet Theatre choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, performed live by Golibol, to whom it was dedicated. In Japan, Genuchus premiered the piece in recital in 2018.
