Manuel Cardoso was a composer who represented the golden age of Portuguese polyphonic music in the first half of the 17th century, but his portrait and many of his works were destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and fire, and only three volumes of masses and two volumes of motets and other works are known. They show the influence of Spanish composers such as Morales and Guerrero, as well as his deep study of Palestrina's works in particular. Cardoso's works were not well known in the English-speaking world, but since the end of the 20th century, more and more recordings have been made of them, and their attention has increased. One of the musicians who was fascinated by them is Simon Lloyd, the conductor of this CD, who has revised 186 of his works, including the organ pieces. To celebrate the 450th anniversary of Cardoso's birth, he and the Carmelite Abbey of London performed the works from February 2016 to November 2005. This project grew out of that positive response.
