This is a live recording of the October 17, 1971 Donaueschingen Music Festival featuring Oklahoma jazz trumpet player Don Cherry and Krzysztof Penderecki, a Polish radical of contemporary music known for his Tone Cluster and other works. After 24-bit digital remastering, it has been reissued as a 180g vinyl LP on the INTUITION label. At first, jazz musicians were naturally skeptical of Penderecki as a "serious music composer. However, this astonishing live performance is said to have transformed their skepticism into respect, acceptance, and finally, passionate performance. A record that can be called a major document of the music world is inscribed here. The New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra, led by Don Cherry, responding to Penderecki's direction, was formed between 1966 and 1970 by some of the most renowned musicians in the international jazz scene from the United States, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Poland, This avant-garde jazz orchestra gradually developed while gaining experience through experimental projects and performances at the Baden-Baden Free Jazz Meetings.The name comes from Cherry's own "Eternal Rhythm," which he performed at the 1968 Berlin Jazz Festival. Don Cherry joined on trumpet, exotic flute, and vocals. Four days before the concert in Donaueschingen, Cherry and the other musicians rehearsed 15 themes, seven of which were performed at the concert.
