It depicts the story of Jephthah, the leader of Israel, who, despite returning triumphant from battle, is destined to lose his beloved daughter in order to keep a vow to God that he would sacrifice the first person he encountered upon his return. The role of Jephthah is superbly performed by British tenor Jill Christ, who has also appeared with the BCJ.
