It features Shuji Sano and Setsuko Hara as a married office worker couple going through a rough patch—a classic Naruse theme—but this film has a comedic tone, centered on a couple’s petty, trivial arguments. Just as you’re chuckling at their sharp-tongued banter, the film takes a sudden, dramatic turn—just like the “shower” in the title—and abruptly delivers a deeply moving finale. The sheer power of that “sudden” twist is incredible.
