He was a lover of complex sounds and varied timbres, and his \"Variations for Seventh Quartet,\" first published in 1975, is written in the unusual form of a string quartet combined with flute, clarinet, and harp, and the music develops through virtuosic playing that makes the most of the instruments' capabilities. The \"Pastoral Sonata\" was written at the request of Julian Breim, and was first performed by Breim and later by John Williams. It is a compact collection of three pieces: the elegant \"Overture,\" the lyrical \"Elegy,\" and the lively \"Carnival. Other original works include the \"Solway Suite,\" dedicated to Panufnik, and the \"Autumn Kodama\" for viola and guitar.
