The instrumentation is the same as in Mendelssohn's Octet, but in Spohr's own words, \"Mendelssohn's work is not a coordination of two quartets, but all eight instruments are written equally, so the meaning is completely different. When he played the string quartet with violinist Andreas Romberg (cousin of the renowned cellist Bernhard Romberg), it occurred to him \"how wonderful the music would be if the two string quartets could resonate together.
