It features four female players from Britain and France who studied at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London. This debut album on the ALPHA label explores the true nature of French music that flourished in 17th- and 18th-century Germany. King Louis XIV, the Sun King, poured immense funds into the Palace of Versailles. He showcased overwhelming splendor to his guests across all cultural activities—from landscaping and architecture to music, fashion, cuisine, and even conversational artistry—successfully making French Baroque court culture the envy of all Europe. Concurrently, intensified persecution of non-Catholics within France drove many Protestant intellectuals into exile, where they were welcomed by neighboring countries as bearers of France's alluring culture. Here, we carefully selected French-style German music composed in the late 17th to early 18th centuries and French music arranged in Germany, referencing manuscript scores found in places like Kassel and Dresden in central Germany, Berlin and Schwerin in the north, as well as historical materials from the Swedish royal family, which owed much to Lutheran Germans through commerce and religion.Violin, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ sometimes support the solo voice, sometimes assert their presence through solo passages, conveying the splendor and delicacy of intercultural exchange that blossomed in pre-Bach Germany. The second half features guest appearances by renowned singer Adèle Charvet, who captivates audiences across Europe. Including a booklet concisely introducing the performers and program, this well-curated project offers a glimpse into the forefront of the British and French early music scenes.
