The play's main character is the nun Megildith. She becomes the keeper of the cathedral, but is seduced by a knight she meets and runs away, leaving behind a statue of the Virgin Mary, who descends from the altar and assumes human form to act as keeper. On a snowy Christmas Eve, Megirdis returns to the altar and appears before the statue with her dying child, but Megirdis' child is dead. As she wept before the altar, the statue of Mary descended from the altar, reached out her hand, picked up the child's corpse, kissed it, and returned to the original altar. The bells of the chancel rang high, the Salve Regina was heard, and Megirdis returned to her nun duties.\n\nThe music by Humperdinck is full of fairy-tale beauty, flowing endlessly with choral hymns and nursery rhyme-like music. Although there are some flamboyant scenes such as dancing, there are no dramatic climaxes or outpourings of passion like in an opera or oratorio, but rather a gentleness and serenity like in the \"Evening Prayer\" from the masterpiece \"Hansel and Gretel.\n\nWhen it premiered, Formeler's friend Max Reinhardt, a well-known actor and director, created a stage with a 150-member chorus and a 200-member orchestra, and it became a hit not only in Germany but also in other European countries. It was performed on Broadway for a year, was made into a movie, and was even produced as a suite for concert performances. However, after World War II, there were no opportunities to perform it, and this album is the first full-length recording.\n\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Capriccio","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":52082192089377,"sku":"4589538827588","price":271.0,"currency_code":"MOP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538827588.jpg?v=1765292342","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/en-mo\/products\/4589538827588","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
