John Iarland praised the work as \"a gigantic, magnificent, and original masterpiece,\" thus establishing Walton as one of Europe's great composers. The cello concerto was composed at the request of Gregor Piatigorsky and premiered in Boston in 1957 with Charles Munch conducting, followed by the British premiere the following month with Malcolm Sargent conducting (Walton was hospitalized in a car accident and was not present for the premiere). In the three-movement form of \"slow, fast, and slow,\" the work is a technical work that combines the free tonal sensibility of the 20th century with English lyricism.Although it was considered outdated at the time of its release, it is now highly regarded as one of the most important masterpieces of Walton's later years.
