Born in Khiu, Ukraine, he moved to Vienna as a boy and received his musical education there. After returning to Europe after the war, he formed close ties with the London Symphony Orchestra and other British orchestras, earning high praise for his performances of Mahler and Bruckner, though commercial recordings of his music were scarce. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1 recorded here is one of those pieces for which no commercial recordings have survived, but it is a very impressive performance with a liveliness that is backed by a dedicated interpretation of the work. The performance was previously released by DOREMI as an aircheck recording, but now a new remastering from the original tapes has been long awaited.Horenstein also made a studio recording of Nielsen's Symphony No. 5 on the Unicorn label, but this performance was made live with the same New Philharmonia Orchestra about two years later, and was also released on the IMP Classics BBC series. The performance was also released on the BBC series of IMP Classics. The performance brings out the character of Nielsen's war symphony, and the treatment of the snare drum in the first movement is very impressive. Both works have been carefully remastered by Paul Bailey (Re:Sound) for this CD release, and it is noteworthy that the performances are lively and vivid.
