He was in charge of most of the operas performed at the \"Royal Academy of Music\" established by the nobility in 1719, and also performed the \"Coronation Anthem\" for King George II. He also brought in excellent singers from Italy, and brought about the rise of opera culture in London. Of course, there were also outstanding composers in London at the same time, but most of them were overshadowed by Handel's fame, and many of their works have been forgotten. This album features works by six composers. Many of the pieces are taken from mythology and the Old Testament, and demand a high level of skill from the performers and singers. Of particular note is a work by Elisabetta De Gambarini, a female composer of Italian descent, who was active as a singer in Handel's works and later published her own compositions, which was rare at the time. Her beautiful songs in the style of the Italian Baroque have an elegant flavor.Founded in 2014 by soprano Robert Crowe and lute player Sigrun Richter, Lux et Umbrae is dedicated to the study and performance of little-known vocal works from the 17th and 18th centuries.
