Perhaps because his mother was of Italian-French descent, Cortese had a strong interest in French culture from a young age. He studied mathematics and piano at university, and after receiving his degree in 1924, he went to Paris to study harmony under André Gerlage, a famous teacher who had taught Ravel and others. After enjoying his time in Paris, Cortese returned to Italy to study under Alfredo Casella, where he fused the French Impressionist style with the neoclassical style of Casella to create his own unique music. He was also active as a music critic and contributed to the development of Italian music in the 20th century, serving as director of the Niccolò Paganini Conservatory and president of the jury for the Paganini International Competition. This album contains his piano and chamber music. Here you can hear Cortese himself perform the \"Suite in the French Style. Songs\" play a particularly important role for Cortese, who was born in Italy, and in \"Two Ode of Ronsard,\" we can hear a wonderful fusion of poetry and music. The \"Introduction and Allegro\" for his graduation examination at the Conservatoire de Paris and the \"Five Pieces,\" his last piano piece, written in condensed sound, are also worth listening to. Psalm 8,\" one of his most important works, is an instrumental piece with religious overtones. It is a rare work that uses the twelve-tone technique characteristic of the New Viennese School, which he disliked.
