Biddulph presents a live recording of the UK premiere of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3 and other recordings. This is the earliest known audio recording of either symphony, and the first time that Beecham and Wood's Rachmaninoff recordings have been made available to the public. Composed in 1936, Symphony No. 3 was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Stokowski on November 6 of the same year, but the European premiere had to wait until November 18, 1937. The London Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Beecham, took on this important task. The performance was based on a fast tempo and a strong driving force, and at times it was filled with intense passion. The following month, Beecham conducted the Halle Orchestra in Manchester to perform No. 3, but for some reason he never conducted again, and no recordings of Rachmaninoff's works have survived. The founder of the BBC Proms, conductor Henry Wood, was a close friend of Rachmaninoff and gave the British premiere of Rachmaninoff's choral symphony \"The Bells\" in Liverpool in 1921. In 1921, he gave the British premiere of Rachmaninoff's choral symphony The Bells in Liverpool. Fifteen years later, in October 1936, Wood invited Rachmaninoff to the Sheffield Festival, where Rachmaninoff performed the first half of his own solo piano concerto No. 2. Rachmaninoff performed his own solo Piano Concerto No. 2 in the first half, followed by \"The Bells\" in the second half. Rachmaninoff completely rewrote the vocal part of the third movement of the score with Wood's input, which is also used in the 1937 performance recorded here. Although Wood was an avid fan of Rachmaninoff's works, no recordings of Rachmaninoff were ever made, and this is the only recording of Rachmaninoff ever made. This is also the first recording of \"The Bells,\" and is a valuable record from a number of perspectives. These recordings were made by Harold Vincent Marrot, an avid fan of Russian music, who personally recorded the BBC broadcasts on disc. The disc has been reissued with the cooperation of Jonathan Summers, Curator of Classical Music at the British Library. Please note that from 9:52 to 10:04 of the second movement of Symphony No. 3, there are some noisy passages that may have been introduced during the reception of the broadcast.
