The theme of the second solo album by this new-generation musician, who plays the lute as well as the bihuela, oud, and other string-repellent ancient instruments, and also performs jazz improvisation on the guitar, is Jezualdo. He was the monarch of Venosa, and is best known for the scandalous murder of his adulterous wife and his last years in the castle, where he wrote a deformed madrigale. In the late 16th century, through his father, Alfonso II, monarch of Ferrara, he received the prototype of the arch-lute from Alessandro Piccinini, a master luthier of the same age. This album contains lute works from that period, as well as Bor Zurian's own arrangements based on manuscripts in which he replaced madrigales, including Gesualdo's, with lute scores, using instruments that are believed to be close to those of that time. The selection includes the Piccinini piece at the beginning of the album, as well as a number of works using chromatic techniques reminiscent of Jezualdo's, which is enough to remind us of the unknown relationship between the two.
