He lost his father when he was 10 years old, but despite his poverty, he received a scholarship to the Vienna Conservatory of Music in 1892, where he studied composition under Robert Fuchs. After graduation, Schreker began his career as a composer and conductor, but was not immediately recognized. He gained attention with \"The Princess's Birthday\" in 1908, and finally established his reputation with the premiere of his opera \"Far Away\" in 1912. This album contains five of Schreker's early works and traces the development of his style under the direction of Sloan, who specializes in late Romanticism. The symphonies written during his student days were written in four movements, following the example of his teacher Hooks, but later the last movement was scattered. Only the first three movements have survived. The long, breathy melody of the horns at the beginning of the third movement is haunting.
