Today he is better known as the teacher of Monteverdi than for his works. It is believed that he sang in a church choir in Verona as a child, studied under Cipriano de Lore in Parma, and later became music director of the Cremona Cathedral. Despite his close ties to the church, he seems to have composed a 50-50 mix of religious and secular music. Most of his works were neglected for nearly 500 years, but this recording of his breathtaking and beautifully fertile works suggests that he was one of the masters of his time. The music, which makes full use of complex counterpoint in the polychoral (polychoral) style, is thrilling and uplifting.
