It was a recording for Hallmark Recordings, a new company founded the previous year by Keith McMillan, son of Canadian conductor Ernest McMillan and producer of CBC music programs, and others. In addition to a fervent and magnificent performance of Berg's piano sonata, a lifelong favorite of Gould's, three small pieces of Russian music with his friend, violinist Albert Platz (1914-1995), were recorded in a three-day session, all of which are included on this disc. Also included is a private recording of Mozart's four-hand works with the Chilean pianist Alberto Grello (also known as Guerrero\/1886-1959), who is known as Gould's only teacher and is credited with influencing the development of his unique playing style.
