Congolese folk beats x American modern groove! This 2LP compilation of songs from the Barka sound, which gained popularity in the early 80s for its use of the traditional instrument ngofi, is released on the prestigious Strut label. A reference to Talking Heads and early Dirty Projectors? The album is full of killer tracks that you should have on vinyl, such as the dislocated Afro-folklore "Bah Lusialala". While rumba, with its roots in slavery and colonialism, dominated the music scene in Congo and, by extension, throughout Africa, they draw inspiration from the tempo of Balka, the folklore of the Beembe people of southern Congo-Brazzaville, and the lifestyle of the local people, who were dying out. They worked hard to renew and promote their folk traditions and culture internationally. The result is a unique musical world created by adding electric guitar, electric bass, drums, and five-string ngonfi to the balka rhythm.
