In the early 1980s, while the formulaic salsa sound was forming, Moncho y su Banda bucked the trend, playing raw and uninhibited salsa dura, cumbia, merengue, bolero, chuchucas, etc., and bringing in plenty of Caribbean spirit. This is a departure from the urban salsa ensembles of the time!
