The two viola sonatas by Brahms are the core of this collection of works by two female composers who were close to Brahms. Clara Schumann's Three Romances, originally a violin work, is a masterpiece full of beautiful melodies. The viola performance adds even more depth to the work. Garcia-Vialdo was a famous alto singer of his time and is known as the world premiere performer of Brahms' Alto Rhapsody. He also composed many of his own works, including operas. These six pieces were originally written for violin. This is an enjoyable collection of pieces, consisting of salon-like character pieces, some of which incorporate gypsy-style music that was popular at the time. Kvetkov studied in his native Bulgaria before moving to the United States. He has performed with Haitink, Mehta, Chailly, and others, and is currently the solo viola player of the Royal Spanish Opera House. His Brahms sonatas are his specialty, and he plays them with great flavor.
