Even though Jean Gilles had no connection with Paris or Versailles, his works were performed in Paris and by the royal family. His surviving works are all religious music: 15 motets, 7 psalms, and a requiem. The two pieces included here were particularly popular in Paris (they were not performed until after Gilles' death). The Requiem begins with a series of drumbeats, which are not found in the extant manuscript score, but are due to performance customs in the south of France, and were added to the published score (1764). The "Lord, I love thee" is an attractive work with richly ornamented melody, lively chorus, and a variety of combinations of chorus parts.Original pressing: HMC901341 (Discontinued)] King International

Tracklisting:

.Requiem: Introit
.Requiem: Kyrie
.Requiem: Graduel
.Requiem: Offertoire
.Requiem: Sanctus, Benedictus
.Requiem: Agnus Dei
.Requiem: Post-Communio
.Diligam te, Domine: Diligam te
.Diligam te, Domine: Laudans invocabo
.Diligam te, Domine: Dolores infernis
.Diligam te, Domine: Commota est
.Diligam te, Domine: Inclinavit coelos
.Diligam te, Domine: Et ascendit super cherubim
