To commemorate the occasion, Deutsche Grammophon is releasing for the first time all of Sawallisch's recordings for Philips \u0026amp; Deutsche Grammophon in a 43-CD box set. Limited edition. Symphonies by Haydn, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky, plus complete symphonies by Brahms and Mendelssohn, choral works by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Schubert, rare opera recordings and the well-known Bayreuth Festival Wagner recording, with Savarisch's piano accompaniment The collection includes songs by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hermann Pry, and Peter Schreier.\n\n\n\nWhen Wolfgang Sawallisch made his Bayreuth Festival debut in 1957 with Wagner's \"Tristan und Isolde,\" Hans Knappertsbusch simply said, \"This young man is wonderful. Although he was only 34 years old, Sawallisch was considered one of the brightest conductors of the new generation, including Herbert Blomstedt, Carlos Kleiber, Bernard Haitink, and Christoph von Dohnányi.\n\n\n\nBorn in Munich, Sawallisch began playing the piano at the age of five, and by the time he was ten he had decided to become a concert pianist. He was greatly influenced by Richard Strauss and Knappertsbusch. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was Principal Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and Music Director of the Swiss Romande Orchestra. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and Artistic Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He also worked regularly with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Musique de Paris, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, concluding his career as Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra (1993-2003). His activities as a pianist were also limited mainly to chamber music and recitals of songs with singers such as Schwarzkopf, Hermann Pry, and Thomas Hampson. From CD 38 to CD 43 of this set, Savarisch appears as pianist, performing with singers such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Hermann Pley. There is also a wonderful recital with Peter Schreier.\n\n\n\nThe liner notes by Remy Louis in the booklet say of Sawallisch, \"He is modern without leaping, objective without being cold, and possesses a fascinating stylistic acuity.
