The piano accompaniment version of Mahler's \"Ode to the Earth\" attracted worldwide attention after its discovery in 1987 and its publication in 1989 as one of the volumes of Mahler's complete works, which revealed new possibilities for performance and appreciation of this work. It is considered to be a work conceived not as a sketch to an orchestral version or as a by-product of a vocal score, as was the case with the conventional piano accompaniment version, but as an independent work that is also distinct from the orchestral version. This piano version is bolder and more intimate at the same time, requiring the singer to sing with even more nuance than in the orchestral version. And the listener must listen carefully. Gerhaherl's singing, which has been recorded several times before, has the greatest beauty in its richness of voice and detailed singing, while at the same time fully expressing Mahler's \"world of song\" by projecting it into the heart of the main character. The text of \"Song of the Earth,\" which describes the emotions of the characters behind the detailed descriptions of the scenes, is a perfect example of Gerhaherl's singing. Gerhaherl has already recorded two Mahler Lieder (one with piano and one with orchestra), and his affinity with Mahler is obvious. This is his second recording of \"Ode to the Earth\" since 2008 with Kent Nagano\/Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and his first in a piano accompaniment version. The tenor is Polish-born Piotr Beczawa. The two singers sing each piece individually, and their deep and delicate expression that reveals lyricism unique to the piano version of the score brings fresh impressions to the ears accustomed to the orchestral version. The two sing each piece individually, and the deep and delicate expression that only the piano score can bring to the ear accustomed to the orchestral version is fresh and moving, and together with Gerold Huber's wonderful piano that cuts through the ideas, a new expression of Mahler is found.
