He enjoyed success in Leipzig, and by 1737-38 had expanded his international reputation by becoming music director in Frankfurt in 1712 and giving several concerts in Paris. Of the more than 1,400 religious cantatas by Telemann in existence, more than 54 are solo cantatas written for solo bass voice, and this album includes five world premiere recordings. The performances are performed by singer Klaus Mertens, who has long been highly regarded as an expert on Bach, Telemann, and others with Ton Koopman and others, and Larpa Festante, who has also released notable albums on DHM. Hear Telemann's dramatic and varied unprecedented masterpiece with a simple small instrumental ensemble and Mertens' tasteful singing.
