The Beja are a nomadic people who live between the Red Sea and the Nile and Atbara Rivers, from Aswan to the Eritrean plateau. This album is a new recording by Nouri, a descendant of the Beja, and his Dopa Band, based in Port Sudan, a city facing the Red Sea in the eastern part of Sudan. The music is a cross between electric soul, blues, jazz, rock, surf, country, and other musical styles and chords, and the hypnotic grooves of Tuareg, Ethiopian, Peruvian, and Thai music, as well as Nouri's own electric guitar and electric tambour. Nouri plays a self-made four-stringed tambo guitar that sounds like a cross between an electric guitar and an electric tambour, and a saxophone that drifts freely through the air. Few recordings of Béja folk music have survived, and all but a few have been forgotten, so this is probably the first time that Béja melodies have been performed and recorded by an electric band with a brass section.Although the musicality of the music is influenced by a variety of cultures, as is typical of today's music, if you listen closely to the melodies that have been handed down from ancient Egypt, it is almost as if the music was left over from 6,000 years ago.
