Note the stunning Wotan by Michael Foret! The 2022/23 season marked the 30th anniversary of Daniel Barenboim's appointment as Music Director of the Berlin State Opera.Among the various projects, the most notable was a new production of "The Ring of the Nibelung" by Dimitri Cherniakov, which was to be staged four nights in a row during the season, but due to Barenboim's illness, Christian Thielemann was to perform three nights, and another night was to be performed by Barenboim's protégé, the young German conductor Thomas Gugais. Barenboim's protégé, the young German conductor Thomas Gugais, was to perform the other three. Thielemann will succeed Barenboim as music director of the Berlin State Opera in September 2024. The C major label is now releasing Thielemann's quartet of works as a video product. The opening night of "Rhinegold" is the beginning of a gigantic musical drama. The story is about how the gold guarded by the Rhine Maidens at the bottom of the Rhine River was plundered by Alberich and turned into a cursed ring instead of having the power to rule the world, and how the gods, giants, and dwarfs fought over it. The play is set in ESCHE, a top-secret laboratory headed by Wotan, where the researchers are gods, and the experimental subjects are humans and giants.A glass-fronted laboratory is placed on the stage, and a floor plan of the laboratory is projected onto the stage. The laboratory, which is designed to look like "Valhalla," is divided into various rooms, such as laboratories and conference rooms, which are accessed by elevators and play an important role in the progression of the story. In this play, God and the rest of us are represented as researcher and test subject, which can also be replaced by the modern system, and Cherniakov's direction portrays this complex and difficult work with a painful irony. Michael Foret as Wotan overwhelms with his presence and powerful voice. Thielemann's conductor also delivers an imposing performance, making the huge music sound magnificent, yet musically elaborating the details with great precision.
