He was born in Loshonc in the northern part of the Kingdom of Hungary (present-day Lucenets in Slovakia). After attracting a great deal of attention in his native country at a young age, he studied in Munich with the famous teacher Josef Pembauer. In 1932, he won the 9th prize at the 2nd International Chopin Competition. He studied directly with Ernst von Dohnányi at the Budapest Conservatory on the recommendation of his fellow countryman Lajos (Louis) Kentner, who had won fifth prize at that time. From the 1950s he worked in Germany and the U.S. In 1972 he became a teacher at the Musikhochschule Würzburg, and from the 1980s he devoted himself to this position. Since his teacher Josef Pembauer was a Liszt player (though not directly related), Kahloi was also a Liszt specialist. His playing is clear and full of life, with a very high level of technique and without ambiguity, and this is no less true of Debussy.Kahloy also made some recordings for DG, but few of them have been released on CD, and even those are now out of print. The recordings available here are rare.
