The Bonn Beethoven Orchestra has a tradition of more than 100 years, and has been led by such masters as R. Strauss, Erich Kleiber, Karl Böhm, Serge Celibidacke, and Günter Wandt. This is the first recording of Beethoven's symphonies by Stefan Brunier, who has been music director of the orchestra since the 2008-2009 season. Brunier sings the melody eloquently at a slightly slower tempo while using period technique. The beauty of the sound of the instruments with little noise stands out, and the brass and timpani are clearly defined as a strong group, with a wonderful ensemble. This is a new romantic Beethoven performance that does not rely on the power of the loudest volume, but rather values each and every note through a meticulous reading of the score. This excellent performance, which combines refinement and sophistication, is presented here in SACD high sound quality.
