The Jicks' 2018 album "Sparkle Hard" was named Album of the Year by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, SPIN, and many other media outlets, once again showcasing the power and presence that has led the alternative scene since the early 90s. Former Pavement member Stephen Malkmus has released his latest solo album "Groove Denied" on Matador, his first solo album in 18 years! This album was created by taking a break from the comfortable routine of his past work, and if "Sparkle Hard" was a guitar album in the Malkmus style, this album is a DIY album in the Malkmus style, boldly incorporating new elements of electronic sounds. This is a piece of music that can be positioned as DIY electro music in the Malkmus style.The album, which includes the preceding single "Viktor Borgia," reminiscent of early English synth-pop bands Human League and Canada's Men Without Hats, is not a complete EDM or hip-hop vocal and electronic beats combination, but all songs are completed with cleverly distorted melodies and less-than-straightforward lyrics that Malkmus connects through new challenges.
