This project was inspired by a vivid experience from a performance with Igor Levit several years ago, during which Zummer improvised responses between his renditions of Schumann’s “Forest Scenes,” giving rise to an exceptionally free-flowing dialogue. Four leading figures in the contemporary classical piano world—Igor Levit, Kit Armstrong, Danae Delken, and Claire Funch—appear as guest artists. The project’s defining feature is its “spontaneity,” taken to the extreme. Zummer was kept completely in the dark about which pieces the guests would play until the very moment of the live recording; he even went so far as to avoid hearing any of their warm-ups beforehand, ensuring that the recording captured his intuitive reactions to a purely “first-time listening experience.” Two Steinway grand pianos (KM054 and KM155, manufactured by Hamburg-Krank Manufaktur) were placed side by side in the studio, and Zummer seamlessly responds to and develops the pieces played by the guests—including works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Minako Tokuyama.
