{"product_id":"5054429213270","title":"Corto.Alto - Some Small Fortune - Import Vinyl LP Record","description":"\u003cp\u003eColt Alto, a project led by multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and performer Liam Shortall, is releasing the album SOMESMALLFORTUNE on Ninja Tune. Born in Dumfries, Scotland, and raised in Glasgow, Liam has spent nearly a decade based in his home studio in south Glasgow, working with close local collaborators to create passionate improvisations, inventive productions, and genre-spanning music. SOMESMALLFORTUNE is the most ambitious and unpredictably captivating work of Liam’s career to date. In addition to the Glasgow band members he’s worked with for many years, he’s welcomed his most diverse lineup of guests to date, resulting in an album that incorporates elements of electronic, classical, pop, and indie music—an album that far transcends the confines of his usual production environment. I wanted to write songs with the artists I love and collaborate with them in the truest sense of the word. I didn’t want to be the kind of artist who controls everything myself. So I reached out to artists like Mick Jenkins, whom I’ve listened to for years, the wonderful Scottish singer-songwriter Jacob Aron, and the ever-evolving BINA. With this album, I’m stepping into a whole new world myself. -Liam Shortall (corto.alto) Liam’s free-spirited and unbridled sound earned him a Mercury Prize nomination for his 2023 debut album BadWithNames and the AIM Award for Breakthrough Artist in 2025. His 2025 UK tour sold out across the country, and his show at KOKO in London was a huge success in front of a packed house. His overwhelming live energy—generated by a lineup of trombone, bass, guitar, and drums, augmented by a sampler—reportedly had a major influence on the production of SOMESMALLFORTUNE. When I was 14 or 15, I got hooked on hip-hop after listening to artists like A Tribe Called Quest, and I started teaching myself music production. Back then, I was mostly into sampling and drum programming. With this new album, I’m returning to those roots. By chopping up vocals, ambient sounds, and field recordings, I wanted to create a work that took a step beyond my usual methods and areas of expertise. Produced alongside longtime band members—including drummer Graham Costello, pianist Fergus McLeod—who has also been nominated for a Mercury Prize—and saxophonist Mateusz Sobieski, this album is the pure embodiment of unearthed memories and the instinctive creativity shared with old friends and new collaborators.
